Aujourd’hui considéré comme le peintre le plus important du maniérisme espagnol, la réputation de Dominikos Theotokópoulos, dit El Greco (1541-1614) fut, à l’époque, assez fluctuante.

Très cultivé, en avance sur son temps, Le Greco fut redécouvert par la suite et eut une influence considérable sur les innovations artistiques de l’époque moderne.
