ÉDITIONS 7L

The publishing house Éditions 7L came back to life in 2023 with the aim of publishing works that reflect and celebrate the eclectic spirit of their founder, Karl Lagerfeld, with forms and subjects ranging from literature and photography to fashion and design.

I like the idea of a very diverse catalogue. My choices are guided only by my insatiable curiosity and my innumerable interests.

Karl Lagerfeld

Although Editions 7L were suspended with the death of Karl Lagerfeld, the publishing house came back to life in October 2023, on the occasion of villa Noailles’ centenary, through the publication of Marie Laure de Noailles‘ novel La Chambre des écureuils, co-published with Seghers. The villa Noailles was dear to Karl Lagerfeld, so it was only natural for this new chapter in the history of the publishing house to support republishing the forgotten literary work of this prestigious patron of the arts. This collaboration is being continued with the publication in this collection of two literary essays by Marie Laure de Noailles: Journal d’un peintre followed by Lettres provençales.

Éditions 7L’s catalogue has also been enriched by the publication of Triptyque, a catalogue by Ronan Bouroullec displaying and overlaying the works and installation views from the three of his exhibitions during Design Parade Toulon in 2023; as well as Xavier Veilhan. Chanel Haute Couture Shows, a book developed in collaboration with Flammarion, presenting the artist’s scenography of three CHANEL Haute Couture shows.

Finally, Éditions 7L and Atelier EXB are launching the 7L Photography Grand Jury Prize collection, an overview of contemporary photography’s history through the awardees’ presentations at the International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Accessories at Villa Noailles in Hyères. Thaddé Comar, award winner in 2023, is the first artist invited to publish his book, Aujourd’hui, in the collection.

Éditions 7L were launched in 2001 by Karl Lagerfeld with the aim of publishing works mainly in photography and fashion, echoing the interests he shared with his friends (Grace Coddington, Roni Horn, Fran Lebowitz…) or republishing rare books (Moï Ver Paris, The Japanese Box), in the rigorous tradition of book-objects. From 2001 to 2019, Éditions 7L published around fifty books, in association with Steidl.
